Prop 8: The Musical, created by award-winning Hairspray composer Marc Shaiman, features stars such as Jack Black and John C Reilly lampooning backers of the constitutional amendment, which limits marriage to a union between a man and a woman.

The ban was passed by voters during the November election, five months after gay weddings were legalised in the nation’s most populous state.

A number of legal challenges are seeking to overturn the amendment, which was opposed by Hollywood heavyweights including Brad Pitt and Steven Spielberg as well as President-Elect Barack Obama and California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Its passage sparked protests nationwide.

Prop 8: The Musical, directed and staged by Hairspray director Adam Shankman, features well-known stage and screen actors taking part in a Sacramento community college threatre group production.

It opens with the colourfully-dressed “California Gays and The People That Love Them” dancing and celebrating a “brand new bright Obama day” and “happy days for the gays”.

Then a black-clad crowd led by John C Reilly and Allison Janney describes how they will “spread some hate and put it in the constitution” via Proposition 8.

They claim the Bible says gay love is a sin. But Jesus Christ, played by Jack Black, intervenes to point out the Bible “says a lot of things”, including that shellfish is an abomination and it is acceptable to stone your wife or sell your daughter into slavery.

He urges them to “choose love instead of hate”.

The musical finishes with Neil Patrick Harris telling the Proposition 8 crowd about the “money to be made” from gay marriage before the entire cast unites in opposition to the ban, declaring that “gay marriages will save the economy”.

Mr Shaiman says in a note introducing the video that he is releasing the musical “six weeks later than he shoulda”.

Miami judge rules against Fla. gay adoption ban [Nov. 25th, 2008|04:45 pm]

MIAMI (AP) — A judge on Tuesday ruled that a strict Florida law that blocks gay people from adopting children is unconstitutional, declaring there was no legal or scientific reason for sexual orientation alone to prohibit anyone from adopting.
Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Cindy Lederman said the 31-year-old law violates equal protection rights for the children and their prospective gay parents, rejecting the state's arguments that there is "a supposed dark cloud hovering over homes of homosexuals and their children."

She noted that gay people are allowed to be foster parents in Florida. "There is no rational basis to prohibit gay parents from adopting," she wrote in a 53-page ruling.

Florida is the only state with an outright ban on gay adoption. Arkansas voters last month approved a measure similar to a law in Utah that bans any unmarried straight or gay couples from adopting or fostering children. Mississippi bans gay couples, but not single gays, from adopting.

The ruling means that Martin Gill, 47, and his male partner can adopt two brothers, ages 4 and 8, whom he has cared for as foster children since December 2004.

I'm working on writing a new book over the discrimination LBGT folks face, starting from gay men not being able to donate blood after one sexual enconter of the homosexual kind.

What are some things you would like to see included in this book?

We're starting up a new community, ibeemma_talk. It's about ibeemma, a fictional character created by Abellona Alexis (a.k.a. abellonalexis). Emma lives in a world where the gay/straight assumptions and prejudices are switched.

Abellona wanted to do this through livejournal so that the readers could interact with Emma. If anyone is interested, please friend ibeemma and join ibeemma_talk :)

Thanks, and appologizes for so much x-posting :)

Are Relationships Between People of A Different Sexual Orientation Different? [Jul. 9th, 2008|03:21 pm]

My cousin Mónica is doing a study for a class at the Pontificia Universidad Católica in Peru to show colleagues that there are no weirdos--when it comes to love, people more or less wish for the same things, regardless of sexual orientation.

If you are interested in taking this survey and answering a few questions about what you seek in a relationship, you can access the survey here: Inventory on the Well-Being of a Relationship.

If you want to link it for others to take, I'd appreciate that, too.

This is a comment juranaz posted on this thread in the community gsa_lj.

I'm so very tired and angry at the hypocrisy of the anti-gay movement, because that's what it is. It isn't "pro-family" or "pro-marriage," it's anti-gay and as such it's discrimination. I've heard people make the claim that they'd be fine with gay civil unions, just not gay marriage, but a) I don't believe them and b) the straight population does not have any legitimate claim to marriage. Christians may claim that God unites two souls, but take a look at the historical marriage: often it was an exchange: the daughter for property or prestige or alliance; the son for the same. God has nothing to do with that. Marriage is a man-made construct into which we invite God, if we desire. I will never stop fighting for equality in marriage as in all else, for gay and straight people both.

I just really liked it and wanted to share.

HRC Email [Nov. 7th, 2007|06:39 pm]
United We Roar!

[Current Mood |accomplished]

I just got this email from the Human Rights Campaign and it made me so happy that I need to share it with you all:

Today, I witnessed something that just a year ago seemed nearly impossible. The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA).

We are one step closer to our ultimate goal of ensuring that all GLBT Americans no longer live in fear of losing their jobs.

The progress we've made today is historic - it is the first time either house of Congress has passed employment protections of this kind. It took over 30 years of lobbying and grassroots political work to get to this point, and while the bill that finally passed was not the fully inclusive version we sought, this represents a major advance - and the best way to move towards our long-term goal of protecting our entire community.
